We are a leadership and wilderness education organization with a mission to deliver wilderness education, immersive experiences, and training that forms individuals into autonomous leaders capable of managing risk and guiding teams through any environment, challenge, or crisis.

We are headquartered in the Texas Hill Country. The majority of our courses take place in and around the greater Marble Falls, TX area. However, our Traveling Survival School is capable of serving anywhere in the state of Texas.

No, we are not a formally accredited organization. However, we do aspire to develop partnerships with accredited colleges and universities in the future. All certificates, awards, and procedures are designed to foster an academic environment and to enable future cooperation with formal institutions.

Verdant (adjective):

1. Green with growing plants or vegetation (e.g.: a verdant countryside); characterized by abundance of verdure.

2. Green in color.

Born in the 16th century, "verdant" stems from the Old French "verdir" (to grow green) and the Latin "viridis" (green). It originally described lush, plant-covered landscapes. Over time, writers expanded its use to describe the literal color green and metaphorically describe young, naive individuals who are "green" or inexperienced. Today, it remains a formal staple for rich, thriving growth.

Global Experience: Our curriculum is developed by professionals with extensive backgrounds in the United States military, global counter-human trafficking initiatives, and small-unit leadership experience in complex environments, enabling us to deliver tested frameworks tailored for you.

Our courses are typically reserved for:

• Ages 18+

• Ages 16-17 with a legal guardian’s signature

• Ages 14-15 if accompanied by a legal guardian.

However, we offer a variety of opportunities here at The Verdant Compass Institute and are more than willing to consider exemptions to our policy on a case-by-case basis.

Some courses maintain strict age requirements.

Survival — the state or act of continuing to live or exist, especially in spite of difficult conditions, danger, or a dangerous event.

Bushcraft — the practice of using practical skills and traditional knowledge to thrive in a natural environment with minimal modern equipment.

Survival is reactive and required in response to a crisis. The priority in survival is immediate physiological needs with little thought towards resource impact or comfort. In survival, meeting these needs is done by any means necessary to ultimately find safety and/or be rescued.

Bushcraft is proactive, recreational, and voluntary. The emphasis is long-term resource sustainability, crafting tools, and constructing elaborate primitive structures while living harmoniously with the environment. There is heavy reliance on traditional knowledge, hand tools, and raw materials gathered from nature. The ultimate goal is comfort.

Both disciplines require meeting physiological needs, but the reasoning and means are different. Survival is crisis management. Bushcraft is more of an art.
