NAV 2000 - Advanced Land Navigation Techniques

(4) Course Description: Learn the advanced tactical and analytical skills required for complex route planning. This course covers intersection, resection, steering marks, handrailing, and bypassing major terrain obstacles using strategic intentional error navigation. Participants will learn how to analyze slopes, vegetation, and terrain to pick the most efficient route before stepping off. By introducing mathematical and visual orientation techniques within a structured classroom setting, this course transforms basic orientation into proactive, strategic planning. This advanced course is open to the general public, though completion of NAV-1000 or equivalent foundational navigation experience is highly recommended.
(5) Terminal Learning Objectives (TLO):
Participants will be able to:
TLO 1: Execute precision intersection and resection calculations to map an unknown position using multi-point triangulation data under classroom conditions.
TLO 2: Synthesize contours, vegetation density, and other terrain features to design a comprehensive route plan.
TLO 3: Develop advanced theoretical field bypassing, intentional error navigation, and handrailing techniques to mitigate major physical terrain obstacles.
(6) Course Outline:
Phase I — Land Navigation Context (1 Hour)
Instruction: Methods, units of measure, and differing systems of land navigation.
Key Topics: Methods, units of measure, global systems.
Phase II — Introduction to Advanced Techniques (2 Hours)
Instruction: Advanced geometry for land maps, mathematics, and specialized techniques.
Practical Application: Resection calculation, intersection calculation, position verification.
Key Topics: Intersection, resection, steering marks, handrailing, terrain features, vegetation, intentional error navigation.
Phase III — Practical Exercise (3 Hours)
Practical Application: Sandbox route planning exercise. Participants analyze complex data, evaluate hazards, and calculate intentional error metrics to develop an effective route around physical barriers and other considerations. Participants present planned routes and obtain feedback from instructors and classmates.
